After Leaaves’ long-form ambient releases with labels such as A Giant Fern, Phinery, and Hylé Tapes, Wow This Beard Is Really Great (I’m Glad I Grew It) (Tymbal Tapes, September 2017) is nothing if not a departure from straight-to-Bandcamp composer / producer Nate Wagner’s usual fare. Comprised entirely of samples from Old Spice television commercials arranged in an avant-garde tale of individualism and isolation, Wow This Beard…strikes at the dilemma at the core of vaporwave – whether an art form so tangled up with consumer culture can truly critique it.

The title of this cassette is great, thought provoking and blackly comic bit of alliteration right there. The tracks themselves are no less intriguing either. My personal impression of these four string based improvised (I'm assuming) pieces is that of living sound that somehow escaped the confines of their respective instruments, instinctively and warily calling to someone recording their own noisy and fully independent emanations. Pretty awesome, if you ask me. Ben Harris
